There is probably nothing more exciting than being assigned your first sea tour as a junior officer in the U.S. Navy. Where else do you get a chance to lead men in an organization whose main objective is to keep the sea lanes open even if that means a battle at sea? In such an environment you would think that everything would be seriously dull and a sense of humor would not be welcomed. Well, I am happy to say that aboard the USS Biddle (CG-34) there certainly was hard work and dedication, but there were also humorous experiences you could not have anywhere else.

The Biddle Chronicles Brian Devitt 9781105914102 Books

This is a Military history of the NTDS systems, the USS BIDDLE and associated military information. I was on board the Biddle in 1969/1970 and found this to be be great background information.

The Biddle Chronicles Brian Devitt 9781105914102 Books Reviews

The book was an easy read. I liked that there was a balance between the funny stories and the serious ones. That made the stories believable. This book can be enjoyed by those who have served and those who have not.
Mr. Devitt blends his service experiences and perspective into very enjoyable story lines. An excellent read and a great book to share with those who served aboard ships and those who did not, we are treated to a little more insight on the ‘goings on’ of being underway and stopping at ports of call.
I missed the Boat on this one. It pays to read ALL the info. My dad served aboard the USS Biddle during WWII not on the later commissioned ship this book is about . 😕
Brian does a great job taking us inside the sights and sounds of a navy ship during the cold war. Dialog and character development are 'spot on' for each story. He makes you think you are right there with him. I especially liked the 'Salt Water Leak' which still makes me laugh. My only negative comment is that he should have written more chapters. Perhaps, there will be a second book. Here's hoping ).
Each story in Brian Devitt's "The Biddle Chronicles" enlightens the civilian on life aboard ship in the US Navy. I learned much about being prepared for warfare and monitoring other countries' ships and capabilities, about command, duties, and serious concerns, about interactions with civilians and civilian authorities, and, importantly, about camaraderie.

What I learned gave me a deeper appreciation for "Star Trek." "Star Trek's" Starfleet is modeled on the Navy, and in "The Biddle Chronicles" stories there are plenty of encounters with other ships, friendly and hostile. I got a strong sense of what it's like to know of one's surroundings and situation only through instrument panels, what it's like to not know what's going to happen next.

Even so, one of my favorite stories in the collection, 'Attitude Adjustment,' shows the reader why one can't rely solely on one's self and computer systems. There is always a human factor and the need to trust someone else.

Each story in "The Biddle Chronicles" is written with warmth and the joy of telling.

Devitt's book provided common ground for my dad and me. My dad, a Seaman on the USS Fiske (DDR-842) from 1956 to 1958, read the book after I did. He included his hand-written review when he mailed it back to me "Brian did a great job in writing 'The Biddle Chronicles.' That is how life is in the US Navy." My dad has since told me more of his own life from those times, and shared stories of his ship's crew.
I was part of Biddle's crew. I enjoyed the stories that I lived through.
